short biography
Hello, my name is Tissa Peiris. I moved from Sri Lanka to Switzerland in 1987 and then to the United States in 1989. The entire experience of being abroad has changed my views and has taught me a lot.
In 1997 I graduated from Gallaudet University with a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies and Deaf Studies. From 1997 to 2005, I taught at the English Language Institute (ELI). I taught introduction to American Sign Language, Cross Cultural Communication and Deaf Studies. From 2005 to 2007, I moved to Japan where I taught ASL and Visual Gestural Communication at Japanese ASL Signers Society (JASS).
Presently, I am an ASL Instructor and Academic advisor at the ELI which is now a unit of World Languages and Cultures department at Gallaudet University.
I completed my MA in Sign Language Education in the Department of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University in May 2014 and obtained ASLTA (ASL Teachers' Association ) certification in May 2014. My philosophy of teaching is to bring up rapidly my students to be confident in social interactions and in receptive and expressive skills in learning American Sign Language (ASL)!
