My teaching philosophy
While I was teaching Visual Gestural Communication to most hearing students and L2 deaf students from around the world, I noticed that some of their learning zone proximal development was used with their rapid real daily routine activities. That had an impact on me which made me decide to encourage the students to carry out activities by themselves in the classroom. Also, it gives them the opportunity for social interaction and to be more confident in their receptive and expressive skills in learning American Sign Language (ASL) rapidly.
I love remembering this experience because it brings to mind Lev Vygostsky's quotation, "The only "good learning" is that which is in advance of development." which appears in his book , Mind in Society.
First of all, I personally want to share with you all of my experience and teaching philosophy and the student centered and teacher guided activities in the classroom. The perfect and real situational activities are designed to the incoming students' independent conceptions of their past or present experiences. Secondly, I would think that the Natural Approach is for new students who need to learn new vocabulary and use them in developing simple sentences in ASL applying the principles of Total Physical Response (TPR) and Directed Method (DM). Lastly, I also emphasize the influence of Deaf cultural and social contexts in learning.
